The cultivation of the heath was not just a feat of strength on the part of those who broke the hardpan, removed stones from the fields and spread the heavy marl.
The cultivation of the heath was also a masterpiece in terms of the development of new knowledge and techniques that helped to recreate fertility in a landscape which had been impoverished through excessive tree felling and highly intensive farming.
